In
order to change the attitudes of the local coummuntiy, to reduce crime,
poverty and drug abuse, a co-ordinated approach ofrebuilding is needed
in any community. The Langalanga Community will only really benefit
from the new Primary School, if other matters such as policing, road
construction and other amenities are improved. Although the KST can't
help with much of this, we felt that we could help in one particular
area, the local football club.
Thanks to KST and a very generous donation
from Mr. Steven
Johnstone, the town of Langalanga now has its own football team!
The team started with 16 barefooted youngsters but now has over 50
players. A Junior team is also in now in place.
The
first team plays in Mr Johnstone’s
company colours (PAC 3000). The
team now has 16 strips. Carlsberg, eat your heart out, the Langalanga
team is now emblazoned in shirts of PAC 3000 colours, shorts, shin
pads, boots, footballs, corner flags, goalkeepers’ gloves
– the full works! and
was placed 2nd out of 16 teams in the first year they were able to
enter the local league.
PAC 3000s money has also been used
to provide boots, socks, money for grounds maintenance, competition
entry money and travel expenses for away matches.
KST
also decided that as the school had excellent grounds, large
enough for two pitches, both of these should be developed and one used
for the local football club. It was also decided that we should also
try to find someone to support the team itself. With the combined goals
of a disciplined successful football team and a progressive well planned
primary school, two key pieces in the Langalanga puzzle would be in
place.
The permanent goal posts were paid
for and installed by donations from Dragoman passengers and KST paid
for and built a 80-seat grandstand. The ground also has tap water
on site and a toilet block for use by players. A contractor
is responsible for grass cutting and pitch maintenance.
For
the first time the Langalanga Football Team is financially able to enter
the local sixteen team league. We were all delighted that they came
second and training has started to ensure the team wins next season.
This new initiative has given the young unemployed boys and young men
something really valuable to strive for
Finally by October 2006 The football
grandstand at the Kariandusi Primary School (80 seater) had been completed.
